Stress Incontinence

From 20 Years of Hesitation to a Life Reclaimed

Introduction:

We're about to dive into a story that will sound very familiar to some of you reading at home.  Sarah, like many of us, dealt with a pesky little thing called stress incontinence. At Eastside, we believe in sharing stories that resonate, stories that make you nod and go, "Yeah, I've been there too." So, let's talk about Sarah's story.

Meet Sarah: The Real Deal of Everyday Struggles:

Picture this: Sarah, mid-40s, full of the chaotic energy that comes with being a busy mum of 3 teenagers, all whilst dealing with stress incontinence for two whole decades. Yep, you read that right, 20 years! It's not the kind of topic that often makes it to brunch conversations, but it's real, it's common, and it's a part of Sarah's story. As she puts it, "I knew it was common, but I hated it. It made me feel like I was on the sidelines. Always. I didn’t run anymore, I didn’t kick the soccer ball with my young son. I had become the boring mum who watches"

Our first chat:

Sarah was referred to me through a friend who I had helped last year. Sarah explained her symptoms and how it was impacting her life.  She made a special point about wanting to get back to exercise as she was feeling weak and unfit.

Unpacking the Baggage:

Like many women’s health conditions, it's not just a physical challenge; it messes with you mentally.. Sarah admitted, "I thought it was a 'me' problem, something I had to live with forever." So she had resigned to the fact that her spot was on the sideline.

Tailoring a treatment Plan:

Together, we talked through suitable treatment options including self-help and the plan to get back to exercise. I guided Sarah into clinical pilates by tailoring a program that would target pelvic floor control, core strength, and also help rebuild general strength and fitness.

Benefits:

As well as stress incontinence, Sarah had been struggling with intermittent lower back pain for years which would come and go.  Within 8 weeks of starting clinical pilates Sarah was explaining how her back and neck was feeling the best they’ve been in years.

Shifting Perspectives:

With each session, Sarah's perspective shifted. It wasn't just about 'fixing' a problem; it was about embracing challenges, rewriting the script, and learning that her body was able to change. I remember Sarah saying she "felt like she’s finally starting to feel strong again".  After 20 years of feeling like she’d lost something. It’s the best feeling as a Physio, to hear those words.

A New Beginning for Sarah:

Fast forward to today, and Sarah is living proof that it's never too late to hit the reset button. She's back on her feet, running (literally and metaphorically).

Conclusion:

So, that’s a very brief summary of Sarah’s story - If you've ever felt like you're on the sidelines of your own life, know that you're not alone. Reach out, embrace the imperfections, and let's start your journey together.
