Cancer and cancer treatment can often leave those affected with a wide range of symptoms which impact their ability to live life to the fullest. Cancer experts around the globe have long agreed that exercising before, during, and after treatment is beneficial to all those affected by cancer. The Eastside Cancer Rehabilitation Class was developed by Helen Boursinos, one of our senior Physiotherapists, who has combined evidence-based approaches from the PINC&STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation program in addition with her extensive background in Pilates. This exercise class for cancer patients is designed to assist the strength, fitness, quality of life, and general wellbeing of both woman and men diagnosed with cancer. Especially those transitioning back into their normal life after treatment.
Why exercise?
Exercise, in conjunction with traditional cancer treatments, is a powerful tool to improve the health of those affected by cancer. Exercise has been shown to help with:
- Fatigue
- Treatment tolerance
- Muscle strength
- Bone density
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Immune function
- Mental health
- Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, and
- The chance to meet people in similar circumstances
In addition, the latest evidence suggests that exercise can significantly decrease the risk of recurrence in some cancers.
